Learning to Draw: Year One

My progress from stick figures to portraits

About This Journey

I've always wanted to learn how to draw but never thought I had the talent. This journey documents my first year of dedicated practice, starting with basic shapes and stick figures and progressing to realistic portraits. I'll share my learning resources, practice techniques, and the many mistakes that helped me improve.

One Year Anniversary: Self-Portrait

June 15, 2023

To mark one year of daily practice, I created a self-portrait using techniques I've learned throughout the year. Looking back at my first attempts at drawing faces, I can hardly believe how far I've come. Consistent practice really does work!

Sharing Work Online & Getting Feedback

April 11, 2023

Took the plunge and started sharing some of my better pieces on an art forum. Received constructive feedback, which was initially nerve-wracking but ultimately very helpful. Engaging with other artists is motivating.

Anatomy Study Breakthrough

January 26, 2023

Focused heavily on studying facial anatomy for the past month. Finally had a breakthrough in understanding proportions and structure (Loomis method). My portraits are starting to look less 'cartoony' and more realistic.

Four Months: Experimenting with Charcoal

October 14, 2022

Ventured beyond graphite pencil and started experimenting with charcoal. It's messy but allows for much deeper shadows and a different texture. Learning blending techniques has been challenging but fun.

One Month: Mastering Basic Shapes & Lines

July 15, 2022

Completed the first month focusing purely on fundamentals: drawing straight lines, circles, ellipses, and basic 3D shapes (cubes, spheres). It felt repetitive, but I can see my line confidence improving already.

Day 1: First Sketches

June 15, 2022

Started my drawing journey today with some basic exercises from 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.' Drew simple objects and tried contour drawing. My drawings look like they were made by a child, but everyone starts somewhere!
